Paloma: the drink of exotic flavours

The Paloma is a refreshing beverage originating from Mexico. It became popular as an alternative to the Margarita. However, unlike the Margarita, which is made with tequila, Triple Sec (or another orange liqueur), and lemon juice, the Paloma is prepared with tequila, grapefruit soda, and lemon juice.

Virgin Paloma

The Virgin Paloma is a non-alcoholic version of the Paloma. To prepare the Virgin Paloma, simply substitute the tequila with tonic water.

Paloma Frozen

This version of the Paloma is more refreshing than the traditional drink because the shaker is filled with ice (to have a reference of the amount) and the content is poured into the blender. Then, mix everything: the ice and the Paloma ingredients. When it has a creamy consistency, it is ready to serve.

Vida Paloma

To make a Vida Paloma, you need 60 ml of tequila, 90 ml of grapefruit juice, 15 ml of simple syrup, 7.5 ml of lemon juice, 60 ml of soda water and pequin pepper. First, rub a slice of lemon or grapefruit around the rim of the glass (highball) and invert it onto a plate of pequin pepper. Then add the tequila, grapefruit juice, simple syrup, and lemon juice and mix everything in the shaker. Pour the mixture into the glass and top it with soda water. Finally, garnish the cocktail with a sprig of coriander or with a grapefruit slice.

Why is this drink called Paloma?

The Paloma drink was created on the word “Paloma”, which means “dove” in Spanish. It is believed that the name is a reference to the lightness and refreshing taste of the drink. Additionally, the name may also be a tribute to Mexican culture, where the dove is a symbol of peace and freedom. The choice of name for this drink may have been influenced considering its popularity in Mexico, where it is enjoyed as a refreshing and invigorating beverage, perfect for the country’s hot climate.

What type of tequila is used in making a Paloma?

In preparing a Paloma, Blanco Tequila is commonly used. This is a popular choice due to its smooth and crisp flavour, which complements the other cocktail ingredients well, especially grapefruit soda and lemon juice.

What is the difference between a Paloma and a Margarita?

Unlike the Margarita, which is made with tequila, Triple Sec (or another orange liqueur), and lemon juice, the Paloma is made with tequila, grapefruit soda, and lemon juice.
